In my first blog post, I shared how a simple drawstring gym bag sparked my love for sewing. But behind that project was a story of resourcefulness and determination—one that shaped not just my skills, but my appreciation for every spool of thread and scrap of fabric.

Growing up, sewing materials were a luxury we couldn’t always afford. My mother, a woman of incredible strength, would go door-to-door in our neighbourhood, offering to wash clothes or clean houses to make ends meet. Every penny she earned went toward keeping a roof over our heads and food on the table.

Occasionally, my aunt would send us care packages from abroad—shoes, clothes, and, if we were lucky, scraps of fabric and sewing threads. I’ll never forget the first time I held a spool of thread in my hands. It was in high school, and it felt like holding a piece of gold. That spool represented possibility—a chance to create something beautiful out of very little and lots of imagination.

Those early years taught me the value of resourcefulness and creativity. When you don’t have much, you learn to make the most of what you have. Every scrap of fabric, every inch of thread, became precious. That mindset has stayed with me to this day.
